Demo Creates Hand Washing Heroes

Last week, seven members of the Granville Middle School Family, Career & Community Leaders of America visited Granville Elementary to present a hand washing lesson to 125 first-graders.

The FCCLA members developed a Hand Washing Heroes PowerPoint, a hand washing video, activities, a hand washing poster for the classroom, picture test and sticker. The lesson was designed to teach students about what germs are, how people get germs, when to wash your hands and how to properly wash hands or use hand sanitizer.

Students touched tennis balls with simulated germs on them and then saw the simulated germs with a black light. Then the first-graders washed their hands using steps presented in the video and poster. FCCLA members checked their hands with a black light to make sure they washed off those fake germs!

According to Shelby Gaul, RN, MSN at GMS and Joanne Sherwood, Phd, the keys to hand washing are plenty of water, the friction of rubbing all parts of the hands and between the fingers, and having a paper towel ready for drying. Both nurses instructed the GMS FCCLA members in the proper techniques. Washing hands for 20 seconds is another important concept so FCCLA members had the first-graders sing the ABC song.

The GMS FCCLA submitted their hand washing lesson to the Healthy Schools, Healthy People "It's A Snap" 2015 hand washing contest. Contest results will be announced on February 28.
