FCCLA Receives NFL Play 60 Grant

The Granville Middle School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) wrote a grant and received $3,800 from NFL Fuel Up to Play 60 to encourage students to eat breakfast, to provide them with ideas for fast, nutritious breakfast foods and to increase students' physical activity.

Led by Alex Mazik and Rowan Yeager, FCCLA members are planning and implementing a breakfast education program at GES, GMS and GHS that includes increasing physical activity of GMS students and demonstrating breakfast preparation. The grant included developing the 100-Mile Club at GMS and intramural activities on Fridays during lunch.

On February 11, GMS FCCLA members discussed the NFL Fuel Up to Play 60 grant during lunch periods at GMS, showed posters with breakfast food information and demonstrated berry yogurt smoothies to the students. Students enjoyed the smoothies and now understand how quick and easy the smoothies are to prepare at home in the morning. Rowan and Alex also discussed how to modify the smoothie recipe with different types of milk and fruit to fit the needs and taste preferences of individuals.

Rowan and Alex along with Chef Jon Harbaugh, AVI Director of Food Service, and Barb Blatter, FCCLA Adviser, are researching and pricing commercial smoothie machines for purchase from grant funds. The group is also considering other equipment that could be used to prepare breakfast foods for students at GMS and GHS.

The GMS FCCLA will be planning and presenting the breakfast lesson for GES students in April.
