GMS Earns All-American Middle School Award

For the fourth year, Jenny Welsh presented Granville Middle School with the American Legion All-American Middle School Award. Mrs. Welsh and her daughter, Amy Welsh, who teaches at GMS, nominated GMS for the award.

For Veteran's Day, the GMS Social Studies teachers have all of the student write letters to deployed troops for Operation Evergreen, sponsored by the Ohio Christmas Tree Growers. Members of the GMS Family, Career and Community Leaders of America make Christmas ornaments to be sent along with the letters and a Christmas tree to deployed troops.

Also for this project, the American Legion Auxiliary pays for gifts for veteran's wives in Sterling House in Newark. The GMS FCCLA group shops for the gifts, packages them and delivers them to the ladies.

GMS In The News
The Granville High and Middle School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America have been featured recently in the Granville Sentinel and Newark Advocate.

The groups joined forces to help Children's Hospital patients and their parents. Isabella Yeager is heading the project along with her sister, Rowan. Last week, 20 GMS and GHS FCCLA members, other students from both schools and six adult community members gathered to cut, press, pin and sew 20 pillow cases for patients at Children's Hospitals. The FCCLA members will be writing notes to accompany each pillow cases to let the young patients know that students at GMS and GHS care about them. The FCCLAs plan to have other sewing marathons to make the rest of the pillow cases and write the notes.

Debby Beighley and her mother helped select fabrics for the project at Joanne's Fabric store in Heath. Fabric was also donated by community members and a GMS teacher for the pillow cases. The ConnKerr Cancer pillow case project was started by a mom whose son had cancer. GMS Family and Consumer Sciences teacher Barbara Blatter saw them at the Heart of Ohio Quilt show a few years ago and taught students and the GMS FCCLA members how to make the pillow cases.

The FCCLAs still need donations of fabric for the pillow cases. The groups are also collecting hotel toiletries for the parents staying with their children at the hospital. GMS and GHS students and staff are also donating pop tabs for the Columbus Ronald McDonald House. Please contact Mrs. Shaffer, FCCLA Adviser at GHS, to make donations of yards of fabric, pop tabs and hotel toiletries.

The Advocate also featured the three GMS Family and Consumer Science classes’ participation in the Ohio Stock Market Challenge! Click here to read all about it.
